Des étudiants et des
chercheurs dAcadia University ainsi que dautres institutions de la
province étudient cette incomparable population de tortues depuis 1987.

Élevage en captivité
1993-1994 : Un projet-pilote conduit par Ian
Morrison (gardien de parc, PNLHNK) avait pour but lélevage en
captivité de tortues nouveau-nées, durant leur première année,
avant de les remettre en liberté. Cette technique tente de faire
croître ces nouveau-nés jusquà une taille supérieure à ce
quils auraient atteint en liberté, ce qui augmenterait leurs
chances de survie. Durant ce projet-pilote, qui fut une réussite,
Ian a équipé 8 jeunes tortues élevées en captivité avec des
radioémetteurs avant de les relâcher, ce qui a permis
didentifier les habitats des jeunes tortues, de trouver de jeunes
tortues sauvages, et de déterminer le taux de succès du projet.
2002-aujourdhui : Depuis 2002, les chercheurs (incluant Lisa Penny, B.Sc.H.) ont capturé des nouveau-nés au lac Grafton, un site où la population connaît un déclin depuis 40 ans, dans le but daugmenter la taille de la population. Récemment, les chercheurs se sont associés au Oaklawn Farms Zoo tpour mettre sur pied un projet dincubation des oeufs, pour étendre la période de captivité, et pour améliorer les protocoles délevage. Ce travail constitue une partie importante de la thèse de maîtrise de Mike Lawtons
