Nova Scotia's Species at Risk: Municipal & Community Stewardship

Species at Risk Recovery Teams

Introduction to Recovery Teams
A Recovery Teams is a group of individuals that work together to develop a Recovery Plan for an Endangered or Threatened species.  Recovery Teams includes members of the community, academic institutions, government departments, parks, museums, non-government organizations, and other conservation organizations that volunteer their time to oversee recovery and conservation planning and efforts for species at risk.

A Recovery Plan will include strategic goals and objectives as well as specific actions necessary to ensure that the species does not go extinct or have a change in status from Threatened to Endangered.  Recovery actions fall within broad categories such as Research, Education, Communication, Stewardship, Management

Currently, municipalities have not been formally involved in conservation and recovery efforts through recovery teams, however through this project we are providing municipalities with an introduction to species at risk in their area, an overview of conservation and recovery in NS, and important contact information for people already involved in conservation and recovery.

When to Contact a Recovery Team and How to Contact Them
Recovery Teams are responsible for most conservation and recovery actions for the specific species for which they are responsible for.  As a result, if your municipality is interested in getting involved in any type of project or applying for funding for a project involving a species at risk it is important that your efforts and project is coordinated with the appropriate recovery team.  Below is a contact list for all recovery team chairs.
